“I affirm the place of swing in contemporary jazz dance, even if in the face of the current domination in popular music and dance consciousness by the monotonously one-rhythm sound of rock and roll..Dancing that does not reflect the rhythmic characteristics of jazz music cannot be considered true jazz dance.” – Billy Siegenfeld – Dancer/Choreographer/Director -Jump Rhythm Jazz Project
I chose this quote for the week because I don’t ever want you to forget about the importance of musicality in jazz dance. Obviously, musicality is important for all styles of dance, but it is imperative for jazz due to unique history in how the music and movement were created together. Being a good listener is a huge component of having great musicality and I encourage you to always pay attention the the time signature, the downbeat, the lyrics, and the overall quality of every piece of music you dance to. This awareness will also serve you as a dancer and performer while we are preparing our pieces for the Spring Concert.
